Critical Incident Support And Consultancy
- Hold-up victim requires critical assistance

Maria was involved in a bank hold-up in her position as a bank teller. Initial assistance was provided by the bank. She was then referred to an APM Psychologist one month later for 'without prejudice' assistance because she was certified unfit to return to work by her GP. At this time her claim for workers' compensation had not been determined by her employer's workers' compensation insurer.

It was acknowledged however, that assistance was required in the short term before her symptoms of stress worsened. An initial assessment was carried out which involved meeting with Maria, her employer, and her GP. Report recommendations were to initiate a return to work programme, and to refer her to an APM Clinical Psychologist for provision of counselling and coping skills. Insurer approval was obtained and counselling commenced immediately.

Two weeks later the Clinical Psychologist and GP supported a return to work for Maria, and part-time/transitional duties were negotiated with the employer. Maria commenced the programme in a supported manner, and soon regained confidence and returned to her full-time, pre-injury duties as a bank teller two weeks later.

A case conference was held with Maria and her GP at which time she was certified fit for work and a final medical certificate was issued. Psychological support was discontinued at this point and no further assistance was required. Maria later resigned from her position to take up full time study which she had planned to do prior to the hold-up.
