- A case of too much care
Ergonomic office assessments conducted at a reputable firm of solicitors revealed the need to discard their plush leather executive chairs in favour of the ergonomic office chairs. The ergonomic chairs would be more suited to the extensive reading and screen based work that solicitors undertake.
Interestingly, the solicitors were at highest risk of problems related to infrequent changes in posture as there were legal secretaries to assist with the administration tasks. So there was minimal need to get up to send that fax and even no need to get up to make a cup of coffee as young school leavers doing some casual work at the firm were there to provide all the cappuccinos they needed.
Nice idea, but not the best for staff who have no reason to leave their chair except to use the bathroom! Prolonged sitting in an inappropriate chair can lead to many health problems that can cost the firm in the longer term. A case of too much care?
APM assisted the law firm with the selection of appropriate ergonomic seating. Education was also provided to the solicitors regarding workstation set-up that minimises the risk of injury. Involvement was extended to include training regarding stretches and posture breaks.
