After only a year, business is booming for Dakota Smith Horsemanship.
Dakota’s eyes light up every time she is asked about the work she does and loves to do.
With support from the NEIS program and her Employment Consultant Alan, Dakota is running a profitable and consistently busy service. One that North West of Tasmania are very proud of!
Through the jobactive program, Dakota found a pathway to the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS).
The NEIS program helps eligible job seekers set and run their own small business. Participants have access to one-on-one business advice and mentoring for 12 months, along with a range of hands-on trainings.
Dakota had a tenacious vision for running her own horse training business – and so Dakota Smith Horsemanship was born.
Her horse training facility is located near the coastal town of Penguin, Tasmania – less than 90 minutes north of the famous and beautiful Cradle Mountain, between Burnie and Devonport.
Usually quietly spoken and reserved, 18-year-old Dakota’s passion for horses was immediately evident when she began talking about her aspirations to train and care for them.
It was evident she had strong and sound motivations to start her own business.
“I would like to run a successful horse training business because no one will hire a young female to do the work that I do,” Dakota said.
“Dakota and I worked together on operational and time management, how to manage risk, licensing and providing guidance on making financial decisions” Alan said
“She has proved to be a shrewd business owner; she should be very proud of herself.”
Supported by the North West Tasmanian NEIS program, ‘Dakota Smith Horsemanship’ is now a known and successful business in North West Tasmanian horse training industry.
In her first year of trading Dakota has had continual bookings since the conception of her business resulting in a strong profit!
Alan and the team echoed their sentiments of how proud they are of the great success that Dakota has had, especially given her vision.
