NCS head writes to local schools

Published on 04 May 2016

Dear sir / madam,

As I'm sure you're aware, National Citizen Service (NCS) was endorsed by Central Government in this term's message. They join other education leaders, as well as Ofsted, UCAS, and the CBI in recognising the real benefits that NCS has to offer.

I know we visited many of you earlier this year, and I would like to thank you for your support. So far, hundreds of Year 11 and 12 students have secured their place on NCS in your region.

There is over £1,000 of government investment for every student to participate in NCS, and we do not want any of your pupils to miss out on this fantastic opportunity for their future.

There are still a limited number of places allocated to your area on NCS this summer, and we hope you will encourage your students to take part.

Whether it's improving their employability skills, strengthening university applications, or helping their self-confidence, NCS is often a life changing experience for young people.

To date, over 200,000 have done the programme.

Supporting NCS also benefits schools.

For example, the programme contributes directly to Ofsted's new judgement in the Common Inspection Framework, as well as helping schools to promote British values by encouraging social mix and embedding democratic engagement.

Students are asked to contribute just £50 towards their place (free places are available where money is an issue), and there is no financial or resources cost to your school.

Other schools in the local area are currently promoting NCS by:

  • Sending a leaflet (supplied by us) to all parents of Year 11 and Year 12, along with a letter from the Headteacher, encouraging their pupils to take part.
  • Organising a parent information evening, so that the NCS team can come to explain the benefits of the programme direct to parents.
  • 'Texting' all Year 11s, 12s and their parents with a link to our website (ncsyes.co.uk) to encourage them to sign up to NCS.

Please do get in touch with us, to let us know how your school can support NCS, so that as many of your pupils benefit as possible.

We are ready to help you in every way that we can.
